Plazi
Výraz plazi (Reptilia) lze chápat různým způsobem. Buď jako parafyletickou skupinu zahrnující krokodýly, haterie, šupinaté a želvy nebo fylogeneticky jako synonymum pro skupinu Diapsida = Sauropsida, tj. včetně ptáků. Nejproblematičtější[zdroj?] je pak třetí přístup, tj. zahrnování k plazům i jim podobné skupiny z linie vedoucí k savcům (Synapsida). V tomto článku se o plazech píše v prvním smyslu.
Plazi jsou obratlovci, jejichž tělo je pokryté tuhými šupinami nebo štíty, a kladou vejce. Patří ke studenokrevným (poikilotermním) živočichům (přebírají teplotu od okolního prostředí). Mláďata se líhnou plně vyvinutá. Lebka plazů je s páteří spojena kloubně a jsou to živočichové s plně vyvinutým amnionem. Existují čtyři řády:
- krokodýli (aligátoři a krokodýlové): 23 druhů
- haterie: 2 druhy
- šupinatí (hadi, ještěři a dvouplazi): přibližně 7 600 druhů
- želvy: přibližně 301 druhů
Říše: živočichové (Animalia) Kmen: strunatci (Chordata) Podkmen: obratlovci (Vertebrata) Třída: plazi (Reptilia)
